The Blue Distinction® Specialty Care program recognizes facilities that demonstrate expertise in delivering safe, effective, and cost-efficient specialty care for cardiac conditions, knee and hip replacements, spine surgery, transplants, bariatric surgery, and maternity care.

Facilities that attain the Blue Distinction Center designation are clearly marked in the online directory.

A new approach to primary care

There is a new model for delivering primary care that emphasizes care coordination, personalization, and efficiency. It’s called a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), certified by the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

To receive a PCMH designation, a practice must include a team led by a primary care physician and supported by nurses and health educators. The team coordinates specialists and other care to help better manage your health. Our Find a Doctor tool makes it easy to locate a practice with a PCMH designation.

Urgent care centers and retail health clinics

As an Independence Administrators cardholder, you have alternatives to the emergency room when your doctor is not available. You may visit an urgent care center if you have an illness or injury that is not life-threatening, but requires immediate medical attention. Or you can visit a retail health clinic for a less serious illness or injury.

Both urgent care centers and retail health clinics can be located using our online directory or by calling the toll-free number on the back of your ID card.

Traveling overseas?

Access doctors and hospitals in more than 200 countries and territories with Blue Cross Blue Shield Global CoreTM. This program helps you find doctors and hospitals outside of the United States, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands who participate in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Core network. To learn more:

Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable healthcare. Individual outcomes may vary. National criteria are displayed on www.bcbs.com. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area. For details on Local Blue Plan Criteria, a provider’s in-network status, or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan. Each facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. When faced with the challenges of a serious illness or medical condition, reaching out for help can be a sign of strength. Case management is a free, confidential program that provides support, guidance, and coordination of care. The focus is on one goal — being as healthy as possible.

A case manager may contact you by telephone or mail following a hospital or rehabilitation stay. If you want to talk with a health professional about a health-related issue , or if you have complex health care needs and require assistance, please contact a case manager by calling 1-888-234-2393.
